WINNIPEG, MB—The Winnipeg Police Association’s annual Cool 2Be Kind anti-bullying campaign kicked off this Thursday, with Honorary Co-Chairs City of Winnipeg Deputy Mayor Markus Chambers, Coun. Evan Duncan, and QX 104 FM Celebrity Chair Brody Jackson joining WPA President Cory Wiles in front of 565 students at École Van Walleghem School to launch this year’s edition.
Cool 2Be Kind counters bullying and encourages positive behaviour by teaching kids in grades K-8 the value of being kind. “Cool 2Be Kind teaches teamwork, it teaches planning, it teaches goal-setting, and most of all, it teaches kids the joy of helping others,” says Wiles. “It presents a direct alternative to negativity and helps weaken the force of bullying in our schools.”
Every year, Winnipeg school students and staff submit plans for a unique kindness project for their school, and a number of projects are selected to receive funding in the amount of $500 to bring their project to life.
At École Lansdown School, these funds purchased a “Buddy Bench” where students can meet new friends;at École Leila North School, students came together to deliver gift baskets to Indigenous families displaced for health care reasons.
Since 2013, Cool 2Be Kind has funded 321 kindness projects totalling an impressive $160,500, making a real difference in Winnipeg schools. This has only been possible with the support of many generous sponsors.
The Winnipeg Police Association believes in teaching students the benefits kindness a positive, proactive approach. “We want young people to experience the power of kindness,” said Wiles. “Education is all about preparing young people to be happy, productive citizens and being kind to others is a recipe for success in life.”
